It was really windy when we arrived at Changi Boardwalk and Shaura was very cranky as it was her nap time. But the shoot has to go on. We chose a nice spot at the bridge. Filzah and Raudha was very patient with us. At one point, I almost gave up chasing Shaura. She was running to and fro, almost knocking some of the visitors at the park. Boy, I was glad when it was over!

We took lesser pictures this time as compared to last year's maternity shoot at Botanic Gardens - it's not about the quantity but the quality that matters in the end :)

To Filzah and Raudha, thank you for accommodating this rather last minute request and being there for my family photoshoot for the second time. You're simply the best!

Former YPAP member in trouble

Jason Neo is in deep trouble.

Following the online furore of his religiously and racially offensive caption "Bus filled with young terrorist trainees" of a photo of young children from Huda Kindergarten (also taken by him) that went viral, he tendered his resignation from Young PAP (YPAP) yesterday on 17 November 2011.

It's interesting to see if he will be charged next.

But if you were to ask me if I'm really upset this time, I would rather "milk" the situation and gain as much than to feel victimized for being a Malay/Muslim in Singapore.

If Huda Kindergarten and the parents of the children in the photo are smart enough to act while the iron is still hot, Jason can be charged under the Defamation Act. The highest defamation award ever in Singapore - $678,571 from International Herald Tribune over derogatory comments about the Singapore government. Make it a million, if not more, for Jason Neo to be an undischarged bankrupt.

For that's what I call a golden opportunity.

Love will keep us alive

Some say having a child will ruin your career or relationship with your spouse. Rubbish! No teacher or parent I knew would ever have talked to us about the joy of being parents, the amount of love and laughter it brings into our lives, together with its sense of purpose and meaning.

From changing diapers to feeding my lil' munchkin, I now know my husband makes a great father and I'm extremely thankful for his thoughtfulness and help rendered with daily chores, no matter how small it can be. My husband will even ensure that we are colour-coordinated when it comes to family outings - he's really good at mix-matching our clothes. The best part, we are still very much in love as a couple.

My joy comes from freezing those moments as a family and looking back at the photos with great pride. I can't imagine living without a camera to document these memories. The day will come when I'm old and frail but I hope my memory doesn't fail me.

I love you, my honey bunnies.
You mean so much to me.

About wearing the hijab

It was a difficult decision. I know I will wear it one day but the question is when? To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm ready myself. Then came the day I turned 27. I felt something was amiss, as though there's this hollow part that needs to be filled. I'm glad I shared it with my husband and he's nice enough to understand.

"Simple. Wear it when you're ready", he said.

No force. No deadline. And no pressure.

I began to find out more about the do's and don'ts. I talked about it openly on Twitter. I confided in some friends - Shasha, Raudha, Filzah and Humairah. I continued having SMS and Whatsapp exchanges with them, some of their messages made me think real hard.

Yes, there's no deadline but what if tomorrow never comes? -Raudha

I'm glad I made the right decision seven months ago - even before I found out that I'm pregnant again.

Thank you, friends, for being there.

Thank you, Fazlan, for being the sweetest husband.

Thank you, Allah, for your guidance.

My heart is filled with contentment.

Life feels complete.

I hope the message that the drama is trying to put across will reach to the intended audience: Islam tidak menyusahkan. At the end of the day, we need to know what we're fighting for. Really.

Racial Harmony #1: Hari Raya Haji

I was upset to have chance upon this tweet from a Singaporean ~~racist~~ dude by the name of Gavin Antonio Adrian who thinks it's funny to make fun of one's religion. And boy, he gets all the facts wrong!

The majority of the Malays in Singapore are Muslims. But the Muslims here also comprise of other races such as Chinese, Indians, Eurasians and even Caucasians - not only the Malays.
Malays don't "rush" to the mosque. Muslims go to the mosque for prayers and sermons (Just like how the Hindus go to the temple and Christians go to the church for the very same reason). Of course, the Muslims also go to the mosque to attend religious classes and self-help courses like learning a foreign language and special occasions like Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha (widely known as Hari Raya Haji in this region). And mind you, some of these Muslims paid for the sheeps (about SGD$400 each) to have them slaughtered during Hari Raya Haji for a good cause eg. distributing the meat to the poor and less fortunate. Most of these sheeps are imported from Australia, y'know! Most of us don't get it for FREE unless we are entitled to!
Also, by stereotyping the "Malays have no money" simply means you're plain shallow, dude! There's no scientific or empirical evidence that states the Malays are downright poor and are hard up for freebies.

Here's MY EVIDENCE from the Census of Population 2010, Statistical Release 2 (Singapore Department of Statistics):

The Malays' average income is $4,574. We are not as pathetic as you think!

Standard of Living

The Malays' literacy rate for Singapore residents aged 15 years and above with secondary or higher qualification is 97.1% which means... We are not STUPID too!

Get your facts right, dude!

And if you think you have the freedom of speech to talk about other races or religions in Singapore, you're dead wrong! Under the Sedition Act, any police officer may arrest without warrant any person found committing or reasonably suspected of committing such offence. These includes publication that "promote feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes". Singapore takes social cohesion and racial harmony in the country seriously because of its multi-cultural makeup. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong commented in 2005 that such remarks will not be tolerated, even if posted on the Internet.

Moral of the story

Seek to understand other races and religious beliefs.

Mockery is the only behavior of fools.

Johnson & Johnson baby products contain unsafe chemicals that may cause cancer

I'm sure this news is SHOCKING to most parents. I used Johnson & Johnson products since Day 1 of parenthood and it's really disappointing to know that such a big and trusted brand like Johnson & Johnson would do such a thing! Remember to boycott their products! It's better to be safe than sorry!

SINGAPORE - The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) said it is "closing monitoring" any new safety data relating to the chemical quaternium-15 found in some cosmetic products in Singapore.

The HSA was responding to Today's queries after an international coalition of health and environmental groups - the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics - had urged consumers to boycott Johnson & Johnson baby products because some versions of its baby shampoo contained potentially cancer-causing chemicals - 1,4-dioxane and a substance called quaternium-15 that releases formaldehyde.

A HSA spokesman said that 1,4-dioxane is not permitted as a cosmetic ingredient and cannot be intentionally added to cosmetic products under the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive which sets regulatory requirements for cosmetic products in the region.
Quaternium-15, however, is a listed ingredient in Johnson & Johnson's Baby Shampoo that is marketed in Singapore, the spokesman added.

Nevertheless, the concentration of the quaternium-15 present in the product is within the maximum authorised concentration of 0.2 per cent stated under the ASEAN Cosmetic Directive.

The HSA noted that these are requirements similarly adopted under the European Cosmetic Directive.

Said the HSA spokesman: "To date, there are no adverse reports relating to quaternium-15 in cosmetic products in Singapore. The Health Sciences Authority will continue to monitor closely any new safety data in collaboration with our overseas benchmark regulatory counterparts and will take appropriate action and inform the public where necessary."

Johnson & Johnson had said that formaldehyde-releasing preservatives are safe and approved by regulators in the United States and other countries, but that it would be gradually phasing them out of its baby products.

Dinner at Sedap Corner

There are a couple of my favourite eateries at Simpang Bedok and one of them is Sedap Corner. The only downside is that you have to wait for at least 25 mins to half an hour for the food to arrive, a no-no if you're the impatient type. But this is what 'slow food' is all about - the people at Sedap Corner really take their time to meticulously prepare their dishes to perfection. And the owner is non other than the famous Chef Bob who has appeared in many of Suria's cooking programmes like Chef Bob Asli & Makan Boomz.

And of course, to really enjoy my slow food, I make sure that Shaura is preoccupied with her interactive teddy (seen above) and her favourite biscuit snack.

Swimming Good Times!

Shaura loves water so it's just natural when we first introduce her to swim, doing simple kicks in her buoy. She loves it! But it's been a long time since we had a ~~swinging~~ swimming good times! The first post on Shaura's swimming lesson was posted here back in Dec 2010. At 16 months, Shaura has definitely outgrown her bumble bee swimsuit. Thank god for the suit which Kakak gave on Shaura's birthday, it fits her albeit tight-fitting. Sigh. It's true, baby does grow very fast!

Seen above, Fazlan's blowing air into the buoy. Blow, wind, blow!

We lost Shaura's coconut tree buoy (picture above) and had to buy a new one - a red patrol car meant to be recycled for Shaura's baby brother. Hehehe.

The best part about swimming - we get to meet Hani Natasya, the proud owner of Kiki, the cat. Shaura loves Kiki, you can tell from the way she holds him dearly, just like hugging her favourite teddy bear.

This picture says it all. Shaura's supper happy just to be near Kiki.

And of course, Shaura is even happier when she's in the pool.

Hubby and I are thinking of enrolling Shaura for a proper swimming lesson when she turns 2. The difficult part - to coax her out of the pool after every session. She'll definitely kick up a big fuss :/

This Thai commercial really brought tears to my eyes. Actually most Thai commercials are good at making me cry, it's an Art that the Thais are exceptionally gifted at - from the technicalities (directing, cinematography, acting) to the storyline that touch a million hearts.

A Lost Art

I love handwritten letters and postcards with stamps. It's just something "old school" about them that made my day. So nice of Kakak to send this all the way from Cuba.

Introducing Maths

My husband is better at Maths than I am. I'm not really interested in the subject until I had Shaura - strange, how motherhood has changed me. I started using flashcards when Shaura was still a newborn (even though the great Einstein never believed in using this method)

....and we gradually progressed from finger-counting which has proven to be more meaningful than flashing a bunch of "meaningless" cards to singing nursery rhyme "10 Little Indians" as I realized Shaura learns better through songs. Will try to post updates about her development on fractions next. Till the next entry!

Ada pakar yang berpendapat mendedahkan anak kecil kepada alat-alat berteknologi tinggi boleh membawa kesan sampingan negatif

TERIAKAN anak teman saya yang berusia sekitar setahun semakin kuat.

'Dah lapar budak ni,' ujar ibunya, yang sibuk mengeluarkan makanan untuk anaknya yang sudahpun disiapkan dalam sebuah bekas kecil.

Setelah meletakkan anaknya di atas kerusi bayi, suami teman saya dengan pantas mengeluarkan iPad lalu memainkan kartun Dora The Explorer.

Tangan kiri bapanya memegang iPad untuk anaknya menonton kartun, sementara tangan kanannya pula bermain dengan iPhone.

Pada masa yang sama, teman saya pula sibuk menyuapkan makanan kepada anak perempuannya.

'Wah! Macam raja!' usik saya.

'Memang! Kalau tak ada kartun, anak aku tak nak makan. Nasib baik sekarang ada iPad. Senang!' jelas teman saya.

Memang ini bukan kali pertama saya melihat ibu bapa menggunakan alat canggih seperti iPad, iPhone, komputer riba ataupun alat pemain DVD mudah alih untuk melayan bayi atau anak kecil mereka.

Bukan sahaja lebih banyak ibu bapa muda kini memiliki alat-alat tersebut, malah ia juga cara mudah untuk 'mendiamkan' anak.

Seorang anak yang sedang melalak sekuat hati besar kemungkinan akan senyap apabila menonton gelagat watak-watak lucu dan berwarna-warni pada skrin iPad.

Tetapi, dalam perbualan saya dengan dengan guru sekolah gim anak saya, beliau memesan agar tidak mendedahkan anak saya kepada peralatan elektronik tersebut.

Ini kerana, radiasi daripada alat-alat itu boleh meninggalkan kesan kepada kanak-kanak, apatah lagi bayi.

'Daya visual seorang bayi masih belum matang dan pendengarannya masih belum bersedia untuk menerima keamatan skrin peralatan-peralatan elektronik ini,' jelas guru sekolah gim anak saya itu, Encik Lawrence Lee, yang juga pengarah program bayi Glenn Doman.

Saya agak terperanjat mendengar penjelasan itu.

Saya sendiri suka menunjukkan video YouTube, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, kepada bayi saya sebelum dia tidur.

Lantas, saya buat kajian di Internet dan menemui sebuah artikel di laman web electromagnetichealth.org
Menurut Dr. Thomas Rau, Pengarah Perubatan di Klinik Paracelsus, sebuah klinik termahsyur di Switzerland, mendedahkan kanak-kanak kepada radiasi boleh merosakkan fungsi otak dan secara tidak langsung menghambat proses pembelajarannya.
Dr Rau turut yakin bahawa radiasi daripada gelombang elektromagnetik merupakan antara punca penyakit barah.
Eii! Seramnya dengar!

Walaupun maklum dengan pandangan sesetengah pakar ini, teman saya tetap mendedahkan anaknya kepada alat-alat elektronik.

Baginya, masih belum ada kajian saintifik yang mengaitkan radiasi daripada alat seperti iPhone sebagai penyebab barah dalam kalangan kanak-kanak.

Lantaran itulah, beliau sanggup berbelanja ratusan dolar untuk membeli aplikasi seperti kad tayang (flash cards), buku bacaan elektronik dan lagu-lagu kanak-kanak selain menayangkan DVD lagu Melayu kanak-kanak kepada puterinya itu.

'Bagus menggunakan kaedah ini kerana animasi dan bunyi-bunyiannya dapat menarik perhatian anak aku ni.

'Sekarang pun dia (anaknya) dah boleh sebut beberapa perkataan. Ini semua hasil daripada pendedahan kepada alat elektronik ni,' ujar teman saya.

Untuk mengukuhkan hujahnya, beliau menambah sekiranya kandungan yang ditonton itu bersifat pendidikan, tidak salah untuk ditonton kanak-kanak.

'Zaman dah canggih! Kita mestilah manfaatkan teknologi-teknologi ini,' kata beliau penuh yakin.

Namun, apabila membaca beberapa buku berkaitan pembangunan minda kanak-kanak, saya dapati pendedahan berlebihan kepada televisyen pada usia muda banyak kesan buruknya.

Alat-alat dengan keupayaan audio-visual seperti iPad dan iPhone juga mungkin mempunyai kesan yang sama.

Menurut sebuah buku yang saya baca, pendedahan berlebihan itu boleh menyebabkan kanak-kanak mengalami masalah attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) atau masalah perwatakan berkaitan dengan tingkah laku yang terlalu aktif.

Lantaran itulah, saya tidak lagi menunjukkan klip video Twinkle Twinkle Little Star kepada anak saya.

Sebaliknya saya sendiri akan menyanyikan kepadanya, lengkap dengan aksi tangan. Ternyata, reaksinya berbeza berbanding apabila saya menggunakan iPhone. Beliau lebih mudah menguntum senyuman dan mengikut gerak geri tangan saya berbanding dengan reaksinya yang sekadar terdiam sahaja apabila menonton iPhone.

Tetapi bagi ibu di luar sana, tepuk dada tanyalah selera ya...

Malay taught as foreign language may halt decline in fluency

Teaching Malay as a foreign language rather than a mother tongue could be one way to halt the decline in fluency among the community, Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim said yesterday.

He said this suggestion might apply to Malays who grow up in an entirely English-speaking environment.

Dr Yaacob was addressing more than 200 Malay-Muslim pre-university students gathered at a theatre in Ang Mo Kio for a dialogue session aimed at sharing ideas to benefit the Malay-Muslim community. The other panellist was Madam Moliah Hashim, chief executive of self-help group Mendaki.

Innova Junior College student Ahmad Muslim, 17, asked what could be done about the decline in Malay fluency among the community. Dr Yaacob said everyone in the community has a role to play in keeping the language vibrant, but the challenge lies in keeping it relevant to the younger generation.

He added: ‘We are not in Kelantan or Kedah, where everyone speaks Malay in and out of the classrooms… it may be timely for us to teach Malay as a foreign language rather than as a mother tongue.’

The student also asked if the tide of foreign talent might eventually replace local workers. Madam Moliah said a change in perception was needed: ‘Instead of thinking of how you are going to compete with local and foreign talents for the job, reimagine that you are also a world competitor… that you can become a foreign talent yourself elsewhere.’

At the end of the session, which lasted for more than an hour, Dr Yaacob said: ‘I’m pleasantly surprised by their desire to do more with the community. I’m glad about the outcome but I think we need to do more work in terms of outreach.’

At least two more forums are planned for later this year, aimed at getting feedback from young Malay-Muslims. From the pool of ideas, Mendaki will allocate an initial $50,000 to pilot 10 promising projects.

If you were to ask me 7 years ago what my dreams were, I would have replied: (1) to save as much hard earned money to further my studies (2) pass the driving test and (3) buy a car. I never thought I would settle down in my mid-20s and have a baby. It's just not part of the plan.

7 years on, I'm still stuck at (2) and (3).

Strangely, I'm happier now being driven - at the backseat most of the time to tend to my baby's needs.

Dreams (2) and (3) are still doable, just that they are now part of my birthday wish!

Survival skill: First swimming lesson

I've been waiting for the right time to bring Shaura to the swimming pool.
After all, it's important that I start early to teach her to be at ease with water,
especially after the flash flood incident that hit Singapore last July.

It affected my family. Shaura was barely 2 months old then.

I knew right from the beginning that I should teach her

the most important survival skill in life - to swim!

Here's the tricky part - I know Shaura loves bathing time but that doesn't mean she loves water activities.

Just like if you love to eat, that doesn't mean you love to eat e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g.

I'm sure you'll be selective when it comes to food, right?

The same theory applies.

I've done a checklist to ensure Shaura is comfortable for her first swimming lesson.

I want her to have FUN, and at the same time, keep the activity within budget!

I'm glad the first lesson went really well.

Shaura simply loves being in the pool, doing splish-splashing and getting curious

by touching her tree-looking buoy. We sure look forward to the next water activity!

Imagine being away from your newborn for work and school - only to meet her at night when she's asleep. I wouldn't say it's a smooth sailing journey but it's worth every effort.

I'm glad I've made it this far despite the ups and downs, the stress level that I thought I couldn't cope and the thoughts to just give up and quit.

Thank you everyone, friends and family members, for your support and encouraging words.

It means a lot to me.
